Planned Parenthood, Hitler
should not be compared

To the editor:

While I can see Fr. Tad Pacholczyk's point about not turning a blind eye to evil around us, I would like to take exception to his comparison of the Planned Parenthood organization with Hitler and the Nazis. The objectives of Planned Parenthood are hardly evil - ultimately the aim is to alleviate neglect and abuse of unwanted children, however misguided may be the methods used to achieve that goal.

Hitler had no such worthy goal. His actions were based on hate. And the Catholic Church set a less than stellar example at the time with respect to condemning Hitler.

I agree it is wrong to turn a blind eye to evil. Hopefully the Catholic Herald will as heartily condemn the dishonesty, greed, and cruelty of this country's current administration, with resultant loss of innocent lives and livelihoods and the shameful use of barbaric torture.

Peace, joy, love from Gospel

To the editor:

The December 6, 2007, editorial, "Happy Holidays: No way - Let's not be politically correct" lamented Christmas cards with messages such as "peace, joy, and love" because they fall short of expressing the meaning of the season. The editorial later offered readers "communication to fight the war for Christmas . . . "

If I've been listening to the Gospel on Sunday, I believer "peace, joy, and love" to be more representative of Christ than mere images of the scene of His human birth. I don't suspect Jesus sought "celebrity" status for Himself or His parents. Rather, I believe, He came to us to share higher levels of spirituality: peace, joy, and love.

I wonder if we should spend the season waging a culture "war" in His name. That suggestion seems ironic given the conclusion of the editorial: "[W]e need to remember the reason for the season and keep Christ in Christmas."
