Brown bag lunch series

MADISON -- The "History Sandwiched In" brown bag lunch series will be held at the Wisconsin Historical Museum theater, 30 N. Carroll St.

On Tuesday, Sept. 17, at 12:15 p.m. the topic is "Life in Wisconsin's Logging Camps: Myths and Realities."

During the lumber era, thousands of logging camps dotted northern Wisconsin. Most of them lasted only a year or two and then disappeared. Time, however, has colored the camps with a romantic aura. This nostalgic image is often reinforced by the recollections and reminiscences of the lumberjacks.

Randall Rohe, professor of geography at UW-Waukesha, answers these and other questions in this slide-illustrated lecture.

Bluegrass entertainment

MADISON -- Portalwisconsin.org will host an online bluegrass chat from 9:30 to 11 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 17.

Country music expert Bill Malone, winner of a Grammy Award for liner notes, will participate in the chat about the music, musicians, and historical and cultural influences of the genre.

That same evening, Wisconsin Public Television will air "All Star Bluegrass Celebration" at 10 p.m. The program features Vince Gill, the Dixie Chicks, Earl Scruggs, and others. During the potalwisconsin.org chat, the bluegrass experts will comment on the songs and the musicians on the screen, as well as on more general subjects.

The chat will be moderated by Wisconsin Public Radio's Benson Gardner, who will tap into guest Malone's knowledge about American music. Malone grew up in west Texas and went on to perform music and become a scholar of it, teaching Southern Music and Culture at Tulane University.

Sunday, Sept. 15, 6 p.m. WMSN (Fox) - "The Lost World: Jurassic Park" (1997). Uninspired sequel to the 1993 blockbuster again puts a scientific team (notably Jeff Goldblum and Julianne Moore), as well as a rival group of armed mercenaries, against a rampaging colony of genetically re-created dinosaurs who are now thriving on another remote tropical isle. Director Steven Spielberg delivers the expected jolts of terror with special-effects wizardry, but the cardboard characters and formula narrative make the movie less than involving. Several violent deaths and much intense menace. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops classification of the theatrical version was A-II - adults and adolescents. The Motion Picture Association of America rating was PG-13 - parents are strongly cautioned. Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13.

Thursday, Sept. 19, 8 p.m., Hallmark (cable) - "Chaplin" (1992). Respectful, plodding biography of screen great Charles Chaplin (1889-1977), from his impoverished youth in London to his meteoric rise in World War I Hollywood, decades of popular success and critical acclaim, exile as a political undesirable after World War II, and triumphal return to Hollywood for a special Academy Award a few years before his death. Directed by Richard Attenborough, the episodic chronicle captures the changing historical context but not, for all Robert Downey Jr.'s evocative performance in the title role, the essence of the man or his genius for visual comedy. Muted sexual references, incidental nudity, and occasional rough language. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops classification of the theatrical version was A-III - adults. The Motion Picture Association of America rating was PG-13 - parents are strongly cautioned. Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13.

Friday, Sept. 20, 8 p.m., A&E (cable) - "The Bonfire of the Vanities" (1990). When a wealthy Wall Street broker (Tom Hanks) and his mistress (Melanie Griffith) accidentally run over a black youth in the Bronx, a desperate newspaper reporter (Bruce Willis) helps turn the ensuing court case into a political hot potato and media circus. Producer-director Brian De Palma has turned Tom Wolfe's satirical best seller into a nasty, overblown, and very vulgar comedy having little human dimension. Many sexual references, racial epithets, and rough language. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops classification of the theatrical version was O - morally offensive. The Motion Picture Association of America rating was R - restricted.
