Auction for the arts

JEFFERSON -- The Council for the Performing Arts 10th annual auction for the arts will take place Saturday, April 5, at Jansen's Banquet and Catering Center, 1245 Whitewater Ave., Fort Atkinson. Entrance to the auction is $30. Bidding for the silent auction items is from 6 to 8 p.m. The live auction will begin at 8:30 p.m. A raffle drawing will be held at 8 p.m. with a grand prize of $5,000. Tickets for the raffle are $100 each and are available at the Council for the Performing Arts office, 305 S. Main St. in Jefferson. To attend the auction, call 920-674-2179.

'Sunday Afternoon Live'

MADISON -- "Sunday Afternoon Live from the Elvehjem" welcomes the Fine Arts Quartet Sunday, April 6, at 12:30 p.m. in Brittingham Gallery III. A reception follows; a free docent-led tour of the Elvehjem Museum begins at 2 p.m.

Concert on campus

MADISON -- Edgewood College Wind Ensemble and Chamber Singers will perform a concert at 2:30 p.m. April 6. Call 608-663-2845.

'Godspell' performance

MADISON -- St. Peter Parish, Madison, and St. Olaf Parish, De Forest, are sponsoring the Broadway hit musical "Godspell, A Musical Based Upon the Gospel According to St. Matthew" on April 3, 4, 5, and 6, as a fundraiser for their upcoming joint adult choir trip to Italy.

The play will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, April 3, 4, and 5, and at 7 p.m. on Sunday, April 6, at St. Peter Parish, 5001 N. Sherman Ave., Madison.

Tickets, $10 for adults, $7 for seniors, and children under 12, will be on sale at the door on the night of each performance. Additional ticket information may be obtained by calling 608-241-0490.

"Godspell," presented through special arrangement with Theatre Maximus, is being directed by Brian Dischler of Madison and features Lisa Bauer, Katie Cass, Meghan Deese, Patt Dischler, William Frederick, Andrew Nath, David Neuser, Wendy Palus, Michael Pufall, and David Sorenson. The music is under the direction of Steve Johnson.

Forty choir members of the two parishes, under the direction of Bill Frederick, St. Peter choir director, and Stephen Johnson, St. Olaf choir director, will be singing at several churches while in Italy June 15 through 27, including St. Peter Basilica in Rome. Their journey also will include stops in Florence, Venice, Assisi, and Milan.

Sunday, April 6, 8:30 p.m., WYOU (cable) - "Christopher Close-up: Rebel with a Cause." Daytime Emmy Award-winner Jonathan Jackson ("General Hospital") shares his own deeply held religious beliefs and explores the role faith can play in the lives of young people.

Monday, April 7, 8 p.m., WHA (PBS) - "Daughter from Da Nang." This Academy Award-nominated film tells the story of a Vietnamese girl who came to America as part of an evacuation program. Twenty-two years later, she tracked down her birth mother and visited Danang. The film avoids cultural stereotypes, instead presenting an honest and insightful portrait of people whose cultures clash, leaving both sides hurt and confused. Overall the program is both poignant and memorable, deserving of its Academy Award nomination. It should be of interest to teens and adults.

Monday, April 7, 11:30 p.m., WHA (PBS) - "Earth Sculpture." This program offers an inside look at the creation of The South Carolina Botanical Garden. Internationally known artists take viewers through the process of creating beautiful nature-based sculptures.

Wednesday, April 9, 8 p.m., WHA (PBS) - "Peter and Paul and the Christian Revolution." From the "Empire" series of history specials, this is the story of how the two very different followers of Jesus became so crucial in spreading the Christian faith throughout the Roman empire. Repeats 10 p.m. April 13.
