Production features scenes
from broadway musicals, operas

JEFFERSON -- The Council for the Performing Arts and Sparling Theatrical Productions, Inc., will present "Masked Phantoms & Lusty Gypsies: Scenes from Great Broadway Musicals and Operas," on Sunday, March 23, at 2 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center, 700 W. Milwaukee.

This program will feature favorite songs from the passion of "Carmen" and "The Phantom of the Opera" to the energy of "Rent" and "The Pirates of Penzance."

Performed by Sparling Theatrical Productions, Inc., the show will involve many performers from the Jefferson County area under the direction of local opera singer Kay Sparling.

Ravil Atlas, a tenor who has performed a wide-ranging repertoire in opera, musical theater, operetta, and concerts throughout the U.S., will join the young singers. He holds citizenship in both the U.S. and Italy.

Tickets for this concert are $15 for adults and seniors and $10 for students through high school. For tickets or more information call the council office at 920-674-2179.

Quilt show and competition

SUN PRAIRIE -- The Prairie Heritage Quilters will sponsor their annual show and competition at St. Albert Parish Center in Sun Prairie on March 23, 24, and 25.

There will be 200 quilts for beds and walls on display along with several artistic garments. All will be judged and cash prizes awarded. All visitors will be invited to vote for their favorite quilt and that prizewinner will be announced on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.

Hours are Sunday, March 23, 12 noon to 4 p.m.; Monday, March 24, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Tuesday, March 25, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Lunch will be served on Monday and Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Quilt shops will have sale booths with quilting supplies and gifts open all three days.

St. Albert Parish Center is located off Hwy. 19 West and N. Thompson Rd. Follow the signs. A map and further information is available by sending a self-addressed and stamped envelope to Quilt Show, P.O. Box 253, Sun Prairie, WI 53590.

The Historical Museum, 115 E. Main St. in downtown Sun Prairie, will also have a special quilt exhibit, "Pretty in Plaid," and vintage Sun Prairie quilts on display.

'Sunday Afternoon Live'

MADISON -- "Sunday Afternoon Live from the Elvehjem" welcomes Mimmi Fulmer, soprano, and Martha Fischer, piano, on Sunday, March 23, at 12:30 p.m. in Brittingham Gallery III.

These two performers are both current faculty members of UW-Madison. The duo will perform music of Mozart, Schubert, Poulenc, Stravinsky, Irving Berlin, and others.

There will be a reception after the performance; a free docent-led tour of the Elvehjem Museum begins at 2 p.m.

"Sunday Afternoon Live from the Elvehjem" is a free weekly chamber music series presented by the Elvehjem Museum of Art and Wisconsin Public Radio, with the cooperation of the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Music.

The series, hosted by music commentator Lori Skelton, is broadcast live on Wisconsin Public Radio stations, including WERN, 88.7, Madison.

Sunday, March 23, 6:30 p.m., WHA (PBS) - "The Art of Ethel Kvalheim." This program recognizes the artistic contributions of Stoughton native and longtime resident Ethel Kvalheim. Viewers will learn more about the decorative wood painting, rosemaling, that has earned Kvalheim acclaim. The 91-year-old artist, who started rosemaling in the late 1930s and continues to paint, has received many awards for her work, including citations from the American and Norwegian governments. Repeats 11:30 p.m. March 30.

Sunday, March 23, 7 a.m., WISC (CBS) - "Mass." Celebrated by Msgr. Thomas Campion, sponsored by Apostolate to the Handicapped.

Sunday, March 23, 10 a.m., EWTN (cable) - "St. Peter: Icon for Lent." Archbishop Timothy M. Dolan of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee gives a six-part meditation upon the Gospel readings for each Sunday of Lent and Holy Week as well, centering on St. Peter as a model for Christian discipleship and delineating ways of deepening our relationship with the Lord. Repeats 4 p.m. March 24; 9:30 p.m. March 28.

Sunday, March 23, 3 p.m., EWTN (cable) - "Lenten Reflections." Repeats 4:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. March 28.

Sunday, March 23, 8:30 p.m., WYOU (cable) - "Christopher Close-up: Looking Back." Hawaii Five-O actor James MacArthur discusses growing up as the adopted son of Helen Hayes and shares his own insights on parenting.
