Capitol City Band:
Presents summer concerts

MADISON -- "Rain or shine, we're going to sing to America all summer long," says Capitol City Band (CCB) conductor, Jim Latimer, remembering the events of Sept. 11.

"We'll play a musical salute to America featuring your favorite music, composers, and performers for three months and 20 concerts," he said.

Summer 2002 marks the 34th year the CCB will play "concerts in the park" at Rennebohm Park in Madison on Thursdays, June through August beginning June 13, at 7 p.m. There is plenty of free parking.

A Sunday series will also be held at the Henry Vilas Zoo on June 16, June 30, and July 14 at 1:30 p.m. under the tent. Parking is more difficult at the zoo. It is best if people bus or car pool as much as possible and arrive early.

The Capitol City Band is made up of 24 professional musicians from the greater Madison area. Played in the style of John Philip Sousa and the U.S. Marine Band, concerts open and close with a Sousa march. Also featured are music favorites from ballads to broadway and waltzes, polkas, and light jazz.

Featured guest vocalists from the community are Ilona Kombrink, Mimmi Fulmer, Bob Junceau, Lennart Backstrom, David Baltes, Allisanne Apple, Missy Paust, Jane Ferris, and Mary Mackenzie. Trombonist Bill Richardson, who also conducts the Wis. National Guard Band, will be a featured soloist. Other instrumental soloists from within the band include Arthur Mayland, Greg Smith, Nancy Mackenzie, Cindy Swain, Jon Betlach, Mark Mackenzie, Don Green, and Paul Haugan. A trumpet trio, clarinet trio, and saxophone trio as well as a dixieland group from within the band are also featured.

CCB will also play at Olbrich Gardens on Tuesday, June 18, 7 p.m.; at McKee Park in Fitchburg on Monday, June 24, 6:30 p.m.; at Attic Angel Place (Junction Ridge Neighborhood) on Saturday, July 20, 3 p.m.; and at the Black Earth Field Days, Sunday, Aug. 11, 2:30 p.m. CCB will play their usual "fireworks in sound" July Fourth celebration concert at the Farmer's Market on the Capitol Square on Saturday, June 29, at 10:30 a.m.

Those attending the concerts are encouraged to bring lawn chairs for listening comfort. For more information, check the Web site http://communities.madison.com/ctyband or call 608-835-9861.

Feminist drama in which a grieving widow (Elizabeth Perkins) gradually puts her life back together with the help of her best friend (Whoopi Goldberg), her college-age sister (Gwyneth Paltrow), and her mellowing ex-stepmother (Kathleen Turner). Directed by David Anspaugh, the situation is deeply emotional but the story is contrived and the treatment is cerebral, with results that are more sentimental than convincing. Adult themes, including sexual situations, occasional profanity, and rough language. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops classification of the theatrical version was A-III - adults. The Motion Picture Association of America rating was R - restricted.

Directed by Stephen Hopkins, the result is a noisy, big-budget version of the 1960s TV series, but here the special effects win out over a jumbled, overly busy storyline. Frequent fantasy violence, mild sexual references, and occasional coarse expressions. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops classification of the theatrical version was A-II - adults and adolescents. The Motion Picture Association of America rating was PG-13 - parents are strongly cautioned. Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13.
